Disaster Risk:

Disaster Risk Factors:

While there are several risk factors that directly affect each of us personally and leave us with long – lasting effects, there are also examples of factors that might not necessarily affect us. This includes:

  • Biological
  • Economic
  • Physical
  • Political
  • Psychological
  • Socio – Cultural

Discussion:

Biological factors that might not necessarily affects an individual are the diseases that are caused by animals including bird flu, swine flu, and leptospirosis. The key here is proper hygiene and the initiative to avoid such viruses and the activities that might cause them including partaking of infested meats and walking bare footed on floods during rainy season.

Economic factors include destruction of tangible assets such as buildings and equipment, even human capital. Examples of this group are building collapse due to earthquake and fire and physical deformities in human.

Physical factors cover tangible objects or infrastructure. These factors does not necessarily affect humans since they are dependent on physical structures such as availability of fire exits, or the sturdiness of the building, or the presence or absence of objects that can harm or help the individual.

Political factors include the diplomatic issues and government structure since the government is perceived to be responsible for the effects of disasters. Disasters might cause a number of issues that are political in nature including placing in compromise the political relations within a country, and between that country and the international community.

Psychological factors are those that include state of mental capacity and health whether it has something to do with babies, kids, adults, or people with special needs, perception of self and the ability to respond to disaster and fear management.

Socio – Cultural factors are those factors include religion, social status, traditions, perception by society, and others. Examples are emphasizing the influence of socio-cultural factors, specifically the role of religious - political organizations in disaster mitigation, response, and resilience.
